Artist's Statement
August 2002

My images are conceived from the sum total of all psychological, physical, intellectual and spiritual life experiences. I cannot escape my past, nor do I want to. It replays wantonly in my dreams and turns up as the basis for much of my art.

When I am able to give the subconscious free reign to input images into my mind, I then temper those images with direct observation. With this combination my works hopefully communicate essence as well as substance. Michaelangelo believed that each piece of marble already contained a form that he was releasing. I also believe that when I approach a plate there are things to be said visually that I need to capture and express.

In Printmaking, the process of creating a print can snuff the very life out of what would otherwise be an intriguing image. To counteract this I make the zinc plates my sketch pad. In conquering the medium there is ample freedom of the voice of the subconscious. It is a battle against process. If some works appear stiff, then process took precedence. If, on the other hand, images flow and are captivating, the Printmaking processes have been surmounted.

Etching and Aquatinting are a performance - an action art. The process of making miniature bais relief is as exhilarating as using a chisel and hammer on marble. It is a dance of the acids across a pristine plate creating pits and gooves that will hold the inks to be transferred to fine paper. It is creating 2 D effects by manipulating minuet 3D materials in subtle ways.

The battle is then to find a voice and a visual vocabulary that is distinctively mine. To find a voice as an artist, I must continue to shout not until I am heard but until my visual voice and images reflect my passions. It is a race against myself, against mundane mortality and against preconceived images, to secure profound, important messages and express them in ways that communicate effectively. When this sub-current of thoughts, images, and reflections is tapped, poetry flows, images coagulate, my hand follows what my passions dictate. Art becomes music, music sings the visual dance and people sense what you are saying.
