Statement/Bio
Many of the world’s most prestigious fine art photographers honed their craft by producing commercial photography at some point in their career. Edward Steichen and Ansel Adams are two such talents. By no means do I mean to imply that I am in the same class of these fine artisans, however I do have education in both art and commercial photography.
I attended Pratt Institute, NYC, majoring in Industrial Design, and furthered my education at Rhode Island School Of Photography, Providence RI.
I began my career as a commercial photographer in 1973 in Erie, Pennsylvania, where I produced advertising and brochure images for such clients as MTV, Welch’s and Quaker State Oil. After four years of freelancing and catalog photography in Boston, I returned to Erie and opened a 5,000 square foot studio dedicated to large format 4x5 and 8x10 commercial photography and employing a staff of seven. We could create entire room sets inside the studio for home furnishings catalogs (Blair Corp, Warren PA), and full operating suites with surgical lights and tables (Steris, Cleveland Ohio). We even shot motorcycles and cars on a 31-foot cove. It was really the heyday of film photography.
In my experience as a commercial photographer, everything must be “perfect”, but even so, it’s seldom considered art. As a photographer for the last 34 years, I have entered and won many awards and accolades. I still make my living at commercial photography, but for the last 10 years or so, with the encouragement of Brad Lethaby, a wonderful friend and well known portrait painter I have crossed the line into “art photography”.
I am known as a studio photography specialist, so for this reason I chose to do primarily studio shots for “art’s sake”. Careful planning, attention to detail and technical execution are my forte, and I hope that is conveyed in my images.
I donate art yearly to The Montserrat College of Art (Beverly MA) auction to benefit student financial aid, and many other worthy charitable causes and am a member of the North West Pennsylvania Artist's Association. I have had several local shows, including three shows with 4 other photographers entitled The Faces Of Erie in 2002, 2004 and 2005.
A word about digital photography - Today’s digital technology, has had its greatest impact on the processing, storing and reproduction of photo-images, but the photographer’s basic challenge of creating appealing images by controlling light hasn’t changed. With proper lighting, a good photographer could still produce wonderful images through a pinhole in a box. It’s not a matter of what the human eye sees as much as how the eye sees it. That is the secret to great photography.
