Art Statement
Art to me, is something that I have always done, whether I knew it or not. Thinking back on my life, living in a then rural part of town, I was forever creating something from nothing, using junk and found objects to suit my needs and curiosities. Tree shacks, underground shacks, brick and wood shacks, snow forts and igloos we’re some of my earlier projects. I always disassembled my toys to create something new from the parts.
We were a third generation Italian blue collar neighborhood. My grandfather spoke Italian and broken English, my father spoke Italian and English, and I, having been raised by both men, still have trouble with both languages. I loved going to my grandfather’s house which was ½ block away and experimenting with his woodworking tools. It was common for him to make his own tool handles from wood and then smooth them with a piece of broken glass. I still use this technique on my sculptures to this day.
As I grew older, I learned that some lucky people actually made a living creating art. This was a confusing time for me. I had developed many skills for my own pleasure. I could draw, paint, carve wood and stone, weld metal, rebuild cars, sew fabrics, build cabinets, build houses etc. etc., and loved every process along the way. To me, it was always the joy of doing it, not the end product. The finished product was certainly the incentive to do it, but once done, it was for others to see and hopefully enjoy.
Art, for the artist, is anti-climatic; like being consumed with building a tree shack for three weeks; then you finish it and sit up there with the birds and think…..what about a porch!
False Fable “Art=Money” If I HAD to create art to make a living, I would be miserable. I create art because I NEED to. When the creative juices are bubbling, I am a happy man.
