Born in Minneapolis, and raised in Richfield, Luke Gehring had the advantage of going to school in a district which had an extensive art program, including life drawing and independent studies, leading to solo shows. For sixteen years he was a docent at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, being the youngest docent ever selected for the program, and considered at the time one of their finest at giving art history and gallery talks. He graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design with a BFA in 1980. In late December of 1988, he relocated to Erie, PA, and was voted into NPAA in 1997. He reviewed art shows on-line for the short lived Tangent Magazine. He has been in numerous exhibitions, and has work in a number of private collections.
