Current Practice
I am a tenured Associate Professor of Photography in the Art Department at Edinboro University, in Edinboro, Pennsylvania. This is my fourteenth year teaching full time at Edinboro University.
My current personal photographic projects include photographing poor rural women and their families ("Rural Poverty") and photographing young girls and young women ("Her Story").
Past photographic projects include photographing my mother for the last twelve years of her life ("Get Me Some Pills") and photographing Pennsylvania prisoners, both male and female. ("Three Hots and a Cot"), both of which are in book prototype form.
My work is in the collections of the Museet for Fotokunst in Denmark, the Musee de la Photographie a Charleroi in Belgium, the Denver Art Museum, the Erie Art Museum, Murray State University, Edinboro University, Clarion University, Eastern Michigan University, and the Kresge Art Museum at Michigan State University. My numerous exhibitions include solo shows in Illinois, Ohio, Iowa, Nevada, New York, California, Missouri, Texas, Michigan and Pennsylvania. I have received numerous grants and awards for my work, and have exhibited in many juried and invitational exhibitions regionally, nationally, and internationally.
Notes on Rural Poverty
I began working on this project last summer. The first problem I had to face was finding my subjects. I had set out to photograph rural poor women in Northwestern Pennsylvania. How was I to identify them? What did "poor" mean?
I decided to go to a food bank to meet the women coming there. The food bank itself had some income qualifiers on eligibility for assistance, therefore anyone who was waiting in line for a bag of free food would also qualify for my project. I stood outside the line weekly, talking to the women, showing my photographs, explaining my project, and showing them my release forms. The idea of being photographed scared some away, since most of these women seemed to have low self esteem. They talked about how terrible they looked in photographs. The release form scared others away. They did not like the idea of being identified as "poor" since society attaches a stigma to that word. But others were interested in working with me.
One woman I photographed lives alone in a single wide trailer with 50 cats. People keep giving her more, or abandoning their cats on her doorstep, and she finds homes for as many as she can. She works every morning to provide food and litter for them. The first time I went there I was warned about the stench. When I returned to photograph she had spent the day cleaning and the smell had dissipated.
Another woman has recently adopted her two young grandsons, because they had been abused and taken from their parents. They are troubled and hyperactive, more than a handful for her. She does not want to put them on drugs to control their behavior. She works part time as a home health aide.
I set up appointment times at their convenience. I quickly learned to be flexible. This was not because of a lack of interest, but because their lives were so tenuous and chaotic. Many also had addiction problems.
At the appointments I photographed as much as I could in the time allowable, usually ten to twenty rolls a session. Later I returned to give copies of the proof sheets, work prints and final prints to each subject, and sometimes to re-photograph the subject.
In the meantime I found other sources who could connect me with my subjects, including several community agencies, religious leaders, or small foundations.
I have found this project more difficult and challenging than any I have previously attempted. Part of the reason it is so difficult is because of the elusiveness of my subject. With the struggle to survive taking all one's attention, everything else is unimportant. I have learned to be both persistent and compassionate in my pursuit. It is also extremely rewarding.
My goal is to erase the general public's ignorance about the diversity and prevalence of poverty. My study sometimes includes family members, their children, parents, pets, and partners, as well as their environments. I tape record our photographic sessions and keep a journal of my experiences. Eventually I intend to turn the project into a handmade book prototype suitable for presentation to publishers. Each woman approves the use of her photographs, and receives copies of her proofsheets and enlargements. The work is not for sale.
My subjects do not fit into society's stereotypes about poverty. They do not live in the rural South nor do they live in the urban North. They are not homeless. But they are unable to cover their basic expenses without help. Some work full time but are unable to cover the costs of food and shelter.
